Tim is frequently involved with the media. This is a result of the interest that forensic anthropology invokes, the high-profile cases involved and the importance of public engagement in terms of the subject.
Tim has contributed to local and national radio and newspapers on topics ranging from forensic anthropology to identity theft to education. He has appeared on Sky News and on BBC One's 'Missing Live' with Teri Blythe of the charity Missing People. He also featured on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service to discuss his body modification research. He has appeared in a 2-part BBC Scotland Radio documentary 'Learning from the Dead' which focussed on the courses that he established and ran while at the University of Dundee. Tim also provides forensic and scientific advice to authors, one of the most recent being Simon Beckett. Tim has also given a number of guest lectures and after-dinner presentations.
Art, in its many forms, also has an interesting role to play in forensic science, and one of his interests lies in the use of the visual archive and photography in forensic practice. In keeping with this philosophy, the cover image from his current book, Forensic Human Identification, is an award-winning image by the photographer Jane Chilvers. Tim also have a number of stunning photographs by police photographer turned award-winning full-time artist Louise Taylor, which he uses to brighten up his office.
